Home of The Hursley Cattle Partnership
A maternal breed primarily, the Beef Shorthorn exhibits great mothering traits, easy calving, docility and good milking ability.
The Hursley Herd was created as a partnership between Finian O’Sullivan and David Rees through the acquisition of the Northamptonshire based Wavendon herd from Christopher Marler. Our line of stock bulls included ‘Hercules’ out of Chapleton Princess acquired with the herd purchase followed shortly in 2011 with ‘Millerston Augustus’ from the famous Calrossie Augusta an excellent female line and more recently ‘Meonhill Highland Beau’ joining the team in late 2012.
We currently have 40 breeding females with 11 followers which calve outdoors mainly in the spring and graze our 154 acre pasture through to late autumn when the calves are weaned. Selected heifers are kept in the herd while others are offered for sale on request as pedigree replacements. The remaining calves are sold as stores. So as to maximise our enjoyment and participation in local and regional Agricultural shows and exhibits we defer our heifers first calving until aged 24 month. The herd is run on the principles of high welfare and low inputs for which the Shorthorns are well suited.
